The camera is believed to be a prototype of the eye, due to similar operational principle. Although, the eye proves to be one of the incredible designs by God! Proverbs 20:12. In cameras, a light ray which emanates from the object of view enters into the camera through an aperture. These pencils of rays are therefore bent by the lens of the camera; the resulting rays, a replica of the object in the outside world is casted on a film plate inside the camera. Likewise, the eye operates under the same principle; light rays emanates from an object of regard enters the eye through an aperture (pupil), resulting rays are bent by the crystalline lens towards the retina. The image formed on the retina is transmitted to the brain via nerve network for interpretation. However, any defects in the course of transmission deter interpretations given by the brain.
ESSENTIAL PARTS OF THE EYE
CONJUNCTIVA: A mucous membrane lining the outer portion of the eye.
Pupil: The hole in the middle of the iris, through which light passes to be focused on the retina.
IRIS: The contractile coloured membrane perforated by the pupil, which adjusts to control the amount of light reaching the retina. Iris colour is known to vary with the skin colour.
CHOROID: An opaque structure of the eye that has in itself blood vessels that nourishes the eye.
LENS: A transparent crystalline structure of the eye that focuses light on the retina.
RETINA: A thin layer of cell at the back of the eyeball where light is converted into neural signals sent to the brain.
BASIC EYE CARE
1. EAT EYE-FRIENDLY FOOD
Eat a diet rich in Vitamins, anti-oxidants and other vital nutrients. Vitamin A and beta-carotene in carrots are particularly good for your eyes. Also, seasonal vegetables, especially dark green leafy veggies such as spinach, Ugu, water leaf and fruits such as; watermelon and carrots are good for your eyes. These contain lutein, an antioxidant that protects the eyes from damage and boosts eye health. Also, eat fish that are high in Omega-3 fatty acids.
2. NEVER WORK WITH A POOR LIGHT
This is because reading or doing any other activity under poor lighting conditions can strain your eyes. This can result in headache, pain in the eyes and other issues. Avoid staring at the sun and other bright objects such as headlights, bright lights and laser pointers.
3. DO NOT SMOKE
Both active and passive smoking is bad for your eyes. Smoking tobacco increases your risk of eye issues such as Age-related Macular Degeneration, cataract and other eye problems.
4. WASH YOUR HANDS
To avoid eye infections like: conjunctivitis, trachoma and style. Wash your hands several times a day.
5. GO FOR ANNUAL EYE EXAMINATION
This is a must-do. Even if your vision is fine, visit your eye doctor. He or she is the only person who can identify any signs/early symptoms of a potential danger and vision-related conditions.
