Habakkuk received more than a vision when he set out to see what God had in stock for him. Apart from receiving the vision, God gave Habakkuk the key to fulfill the vision. “…Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.” Habakkuk 2:2. The only way to make a vision plain is to set goals that will help you to achieve the vision.

Generally, everybody sets goals especially through what is known as “New Year Resolutions.” However, most New Year resolutions are driven by a simple desire to stop some negative attitudes e.g. “In this new year, I will not tell lies” “In this new year I will not procrastinate.” These habits formed over the years cannot be stopped by a mere resolution on New Year eve.

There are foundations that need to be replaced and structures that need to be erected to power the resolutions made. For example, the resolution “In this new year, I will not procrastinate” should be built on the self awareness that the individual procrastinates. Such an individual should read materials that enhance action and get things done. Such books like EAT THE FROG by Brian Tracy, GETTING THINGS DONE by David Allen and BILLIONAIRE GOES TO SCHOOL by Wale Adeduro are recommended resources.

People do not set realistic goals because they are not realistic. Remember, nothing works until you work on it. Even faith requires work. James 2:20. This is why you must write down your vision and back it up with goals and plans. If your goals are to meet the requirement of being time bound then you must create time and schedules to implement them.
The following are some of the reasons why people do not set realistic goals:
1. People do not have a self awareness of themselves: You need authenticity by knowing yourself well and being aware of your inner states. God had to first get Gideon to understand himself before the latter could be used (Judges 6:12). When you do not understand yourself, your strengths, talents, and abilities you cannot set realistic goals.
2. People do not clarify their vision: Goals are building blocks for the attainment of a vision. If you do not have a 5 to 10 year vision you cannot effectively set realistic goals for a year. Jesus kept pointing the disciples to the future “in my father’s house.”
3. Laziness: Setting goals demands hard work. It is a strategic exercise that involves a lot of thinking, analysis and permutations. It is like what Military Generals do in the war room. It is also akin to what a football coach and his crew do before a football match. In Luke 14:28 Jesus taught us about the need to sit down and count the cost upfront. To set realistic goals requires sitting down first.
4. Illogical Assumption: If I intend to increase my rental income by 100% this year, my goal is unrealistic. I first need to understand the prevailing rent in my environment and take cognizance of the unique selling point of my property. I may need to enhance the functionality and aesthetic value of the property. David could not have reigned as king in Israel without first defeating Goliath and understanding the protocol of the palace by wise behaviour (1 Samuel 18:5,14,15 and 30).
5. Lack of Enablers: Strategic partnership enhances goal attainment. Who are the strategic people you have identified and enlisted to help in the pursuit of your goals? You need models, mentors and minders who will help you refine and process the realization of your goals. God is the greatest enabler and prayer is the best route to enlist the help of God (Isaiah 41:13). Vain is the help of man (Psalm 60:11).
6. Poor Resource Allocation: Every goal requires resources for its realization. You must deploy 80% of your time and resources to your most valued goal at all times. You cannot embark on family vacation abroad for the fun of it if you have a goal that requires more money for investment or academic purpose.
7. Lack of Passion and Commitment: If you want the zeal of the Lord to perform His word in your life (Isaiah 9:7) you must allow the zeal for His house to consume you (Psalm 69:9). Passion for soul winning unlocks God’s power to fulfill your goals. Passion produces performance energy. If you do not have passion, your commitment will drop when you are confronted with obstacles. Opposition is surmounted when you are passionate about your vision and goal.

PRODUCTIVITY TASK
Write out THREE THINGS you must achieve in 2019 that will significantly boost your vision in the next five years. These should be with respect to Spiritual goals, Family goals, Financial goals, Health goals, Social goals, Academic/Professional goals and Career/Business goals.

CONTROL YOUR THOUGHTS

One of the greatest undoing of man is negative thoughts. You are what you think. In the process of time, your thought becomes your word; your word becomes your action; your action becomes your habit; your habit becomes your character and your character becomes your destiny.

What is your thought pattern? Is it positive or negative? Is your thought pure? Is it lovely? Is it holy? Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Philippians 4:8

Do you want to excel in life? It starts from your thought pattern. Success achievers are success thinkers. Every achievement in life passes through the scrutiny of mental analysis. A man’s disposition is the sum total of his thoughts, decisions and choices. You will scale the height of victory-your cherished aspiration and pursuit or get rubbished in the valley of defeat by the dominating thought of your mind.

The mind is the starting point of success or failure. The battle is in the field but victory is attained before you start. You win or lose first in your mind before it becomes a reality. Success is not stumbled at. Flooding your mind with positive thoughts is an established mental procedure with successful folk.

Your mind is a well of life. Meditation is concentrated mental attention. God told Joshua to meditate on the word day and night in order to have good success. Every successful man or woman is pre-eminently a deep thinker. Be positive. Think! Pray through but think through ultimately.

Your actions cannot be positive when your thoughts are negative. Life reflects thoughts. You cannot confess success when you think failure. If you want to remain in constant health, let your thoughts be healthy. Think forward to go forward. A man backslides in the direction of his backward thoughts. Thinking backward is like putting the gear of a car in reverse and attempting to accelerate. Rather than go forward, the car will go backward.

TRUST IN THE LORD
Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth. Mark 9:23. There is nothing too difficult for God to do. Put your trust in the Lord, you will overcome the force of stagnancy. Those who had their destiny redefined preeminently trusted in the Lord. You can never be defeated when you partner with God. Peter walked on the water to meet Jesus on the premise of the word, COME. He believed he could walk to meet Jesus and he did! When the wind was boisterous and fear pulled faith off his feet, Jesus stretched forth His hand to save him from sinking.

BE OBEDIENT
If they obey and serve him, they shall spend their days in prosperity, and their years in pleasures. Job 36:11. Obedience is vital in overcoming stagnancy. Peter and his friends toiled all night fishing and caught nothing. A simple instruction with a simple obedience put an end to the stagnancy that pervaded that night. He cast his net and caught many fishes. John 21:6

And when he saw them, he said unto them, go show yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed. Luke 17:14. It did not make sense for the 10 lepers to go and show themselves to the priest. Only lepers who are cured are required to go to the priest for verification and final approval. Jesus told the lepers to go and show themselves to the priest without prior healing. It looked ridiculous but they obeyed. They were cured on their way to see the priest.

The place of the Holy Spirit in our lives cannot be contested. We can’t do anything of our own volition otherwise we will be chasing shadows. There are so many talented young men and women who went into the wrong profession. They look back and are filled with regrets. It is therefore important that you seek the face of God before making any decision.

I welcome you to this edition of the herald of His coming by extending Calvary greetings to you in the precious name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. The destiny of all human is anchored upon the victory at Calvary. Therefore, I believe it is most expedient as we remember the person of Jesus Christ, His death, burial and resurrection, to take time to meditate on His word in order to actualize them in our lives. Hence we shall be looking at what Jesus said in Matthew 5:8 – Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

Christianity is basically about relationship with the God-head and beloved, I want you to be reminded that purity is the only platform on which our relationship with God the father, Son and Holy Ghost can prosper. The truth here is that, of what relevance is your relationship with someone you don’t ever get to see in your circumstance! I have always said that God’s instruction on purity is in the self-enlightened interest of the child of God. The other question is, what does it mean to see God? It means to ultimately see God in eternity and I am also firmly convinced that it equally means to see God show up in our situations here on earth. Are any of these unimportant for the pilgrim? I do not think so.

Watch this, the scripture says “Blessed are the pure in heart…” and, not pure in act? God is more interested in the state of our hearts than in the acts of our hands. For our acts to be right with God, our hearts must be right with God. God does not show up on the outside until He has taken hold of us on the inside. If we desire God to show up in our world, our hearts must be right with Him. See the Word Version of Matthew 5:8 – “You’re blessed when you get your inside world—your mind and heart—put right. Then you can see God in the outside world.” Is that not wonderful? The inward journey must be complete in us for the outward manifestation to be convincing. Beloved, here is the crux of the matter – we must do something about our heart.

It must be noted however that the word pure does not exactly mean the same thing as the word clean. While being pure represents homogeneity (that is not mixed with anything) the word clean means absence of dirt. For instance a mixture of a clean cup of gasoline and a drum of very clean water is no longer pure water and neither is it pure gasoline – albeit the two substances are clean.

Therefore, if I may paraphrase Jesus’ statement, He is saying – “Blessed are those whose hearts are all for God: for they shall see Him’’ (Emphasis mine). Have you ever wondered why God testified about David as being a man after His own heart? I believe this gives us a clue into such a commendation from a God who dwells in pristine holiness. The desire of God over the generations is that nothing competes with Him in the lives of His people. Hence, acting in disobedience, Israel had to go to captivity several times and sorely oppressed by their adversary. God does not want to reign where anything else reigns! Little wonder Jesus said in Matthew 6:24 “No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” I believe no intention can be made clearer than this. Jesus says “No man…” And that is exactly what it is.

Brethren, what is the state of your heart. Who or what is it that competes with God in your heart. Please note that observable acts of righteousness are not enough, they must be flowing out of a heart fully dedicated to God.  Our hearts were designed as the throne room of God and He abhors rivalry. Beloved, drive out competition and let God sit on His throne. An impure heart will eventually lead to a condemned life! It is time to wise up. Let Baba reign in your heart and let His love ravage and consume your entire being inside out.

As I round off, let me ask you these questions – what is the state of your heart? Is it pure or poor? Is God showing up on the outside? I like for you to critically consider this all important subject of purity of the heart and trust God to make us whole through the blood of Jesus.

Until I come your way again next edition by the grace of God, may His grace sustain you to the very end in Jesus name.

Thank you.
