The Priest took a last minute look of himself in the mirror and saw that everything seemed to be in place, except the neck collar that was not well positioned. He adjusted it, and everything was in order. He was now ready to go and carry out his priestly duties for the day. But, he needed to scan through his sermon notes for the last time. Having done that, he set out for a most crucial function, to deliver his well prepared sermon and administer sacraments to lost souls. On the way, he saw a sight that startled him: a motionless form on the ground on the other side of the road. The figure on the ground appeared very desperate, no question about it; but if he stopped to know the details, his journey would be interrupted and he didn’t need that! So, off he went for his assignment, increasing his steps as he went along.
Meanwhile, the man on the ground kept praying in his heart for a humane fellow to come along. Very soon, he heard another footsteps and his hope increased. His sure steady steps towards his side made him believe that; maybe this one was going to be interested in his case. The ‘other one’ that passed earlier was in so much hurry that he didn’t even as much as stop for a moment, but merely went to the other lane and left!
As the man drew near, the one on the ground began to experience a welcome relief that at long last help had come. But this hope was dashed after the man looked him over, shook his head and like the other fellow, passed to the other side and left! Surely, there were no more good men on earth! You mean these last ‘two’ were ministers of God! Apart from those, several others had also passed. For several hours, he lay in the pool of his own blood, and nobody seemed to care; some may have even assumed him dead. Talking of death, he gradually began to prepare his mind for it; the only snag there was that his family would never know the details. Within this moment, he heard oncoming steps and ignored it in his heart. He was already doomed to die anyway; this was not going to be different from the rest!
“But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was and when he saw him, he had compassion on him, and went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him to an inn, and took care of him.” Luke 10:33-34
This is the story of the Good Samaritan. Not only did the man do the above, he also made some deposits for the man’s upkeep and charged the inn keeper to take good care of him, with a promise to pay back the balance when next he visited.
You could imagine the state of the mind of the wounded man when he got help from unexpected quarters.
It is instructive to note that many people (this is by deduction) passed that route that day, but none saved the situation except a Samaritan!
Friends, we are in a world that is fast becoming individualistic and insensitive to the plight of mankind. All around us, we come across deplorable situations such as the above; we need to change the narrative by doing something about them! Let us not look the other way anymore, let us lend a helping hand to a dying world. I believe the Bible specifically mentioned that a Priest and a Samaritan passed that route to express disappointment at their indifference! But we would not be indifferent; we would make a difference today by becoming an extension of ‘our’ heavenly Father’s hand. Yes, we can CHANGE THE NARRATIVE!
