COVID-19: The place of prophecy

March 31, 2020
Prophecy is sometimes contentious amongst human beings and most of the time, only those who are wise take heed to prophecies given by true men of God. The truth however is that God is not a man that He should lie neither is He the son of man that He should repent, whatsoever He has said will surely come to pass.

According to the English Dictionary, prophecy is a prediction especially one made by a prophet or under divine inspiration. Going through the scriptures, there were several places many servants of God prophesied about what would happen in the future; some heard the prophecies and took precautionary steps while some never believed.

For instance, when there was great famine in Samaria, Elisha prophesied, “Thus saith the Lord, tomorrow, about this time shall a measure of fine flour be sold for a shekel and two measures of barley for a shekel in the gate of Samaria.’’ Immediately one of the king’s lieutenants heard what the prophet of the Lord said, he opened his mouth without considering the awesomeness of God and said, “Behold, if the LORD would make windows in heaven, might this thing be?” Elisha who was a fiery prophet with no time for frivolities gave another word but this time to the man who believed he knew everything. “Behold, thou shalt see it with thine eyes, but shalt not eat thereof.” 2 Kings 7: 1-2.

At the cross-over service from 2019-2020, held at Redemption Camp, Ogun State, Nigeria, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, gave some prophecies of what would happen in year 2020. Speaking on what would happen on the international scene, he said, “This year, unless we pray very hard, the earth is going to behave like a child having convulsion. The Lord said whatever we saw in 2019 was nothing compared to what is coming in 2020 except His children would pray. The reason is because sin is becoming more rampant than before. Things that could not be mentioned in the past are now being celebrated. If we pray and evangelize God will change it.”

Before several people could question the authenticity of this prophecy, the world began to manifest like a child in convulsion in early 2020 due to the outbreak of Coronvirus in Wuhan, China, in December 2019, thus confirming the song that says, God cannot lie, His word will surely come to pass.

Coronaviruses according to World Health Organization (WHO) are a large family of viruses which may cause illness in animals or humans.  In humans, several coronaviruses are known to cause respiratory infections ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). The most recently discovered coronavirus causes coronavirus disease COVID-19.

Presently, over 36,000 deaths have been recorded against COVID-19 and the figures are rising each day as over 750,000 people have been affected. Nigeria recorded the first death on March 23rd, 2020 when 67-year old, Suleiman Achimugu, a former Managing Director of Petroleum Products Marketing Company (PPMC) died following his return to Nigeria from a medical treatment in the United Kingdom. The second death was announced on March 30th, 2020 by the minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Enahire.

The best the world could do now is to lockdown and stay at home to observe a compulsory holiday. Since no medicine or vaccine could cure COVID-19 presently, many nations shut their land borders, airports etc. and restricted movements as citizens were asked to stay at home. All over the world, there is a compulsory holiday for human beings as they were forced to stay at home.

This again brings to pass the word spoken by Pastor Adeboye, on Sunday March 22, 2020, while speaking to his children before a sermon he delivered that day due to the restrictions of the gatherings to 50 people. He said, “God told me that the world would be on compulsory holiday.” This prophecy has been fulfilled as COVID-19 ravages nations of the world.

As the Lord lives, prophecies will continue to come from God to man but the question is, will man be humble enough to take heed to the word of God?
