Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints. (Psalm 116:15).
I started Pastoring our beloved father about three years ago. The first encounter I had with him was so refreshing that I resolved to do everything within my power to nurture him in the faith.
I saw the willingness and humility to learn from anybody in him and I am grateful to God for the opportunity to meet with such a humble king. He was a truthful and forthright person. In spite of his age, he honoured genuine men of God with utmost and outright submission.
He was a God-fearing king, very respectful, courageous and compassionate; a man of integrity and highly disciplined. Indeed, he was humility-personified and an epitome of generosity.
Towards the end of year 2018, late Oba David Victor, Olateru-Olagbegi the 3rd, informed me early enough that he would mark his 20th anniversary on the throne with a Special Thanksgiving Service in February 2019 and that both of us would plan and execute the programme. To God’s glory, the ceremony was a remarkable success.
At another time, His Royal Highness informed me that he made a vow to God to build a modern 21st century Church Auditorium in the palace to replace the old one built by his late father several years ago. With the encouragement given to Kabiyesi, he expedited action and the project was at the roofing level with an utmost desire to invite Pastor E.A. Adeboye, to dedicate the new Church building in June 2019 but alas! He answered the call of the lover of his soul before that day.
Prior to my last visit to him on Saturday, 13th April, 2019, I had an opportunity to spend more than one hour discussing with him at the beginning of the month when he shared the testimonies of his life, his career at the Nigerian Law School, Lagos; the challenges that surrounded his ascension to the throne, how he overcame all obstacles through the help of God and his salvation experience. He said Pastor E. A. Adeboye and the Redeemed Christian of God stood by him in his trying period.
His discussion with me further centered on his proposed master plan for the development of Owo Kingdom which according to him has been handed over to His Excellency, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN), the Governor of Ondo State, who to the joy of the royal father has commenced the execution of the plan. We prayed together after the discussions and I left to enable Kabiyesi to observe his siesta. Little did I realize that his departure to the great beyond would be soon and sudden.
Oba David Victor Folagbade Olateru-Olagbegi, you lived and died well. My joy knew no bounds when I remembered that with all the battles and challenges you faced, you resolutely served the Lord and died fulfilling your destiny mandate as a gallant soldier of the Cross.
Your death resonates passionately the exhortation of Apostle Paul in Philippians in 1:21 “For me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.” Your glorious exit will continue to be a good reference point for other Christian kings in the body of Christ for a long time to come. You were indeed a legend and a very rare breed. Even in death, I love and celebrate your life of outstanding achievements and positive impact. The Redeemed Christian of God, Ondo Province 3 will miss you for your immeasurable contributions to the development of the church in your domain.
Rest on in the bosom of the Lord you served and lived for till the Resurrection Morning when we will meet to part no more. Good night soldier of the Lord!
