That little effort counts

October 15, 2018
Many lives are wasting away because their little needs are not met by those who have solutions to those problems because they have not utilized the little they have with or in them because of the erroneous belief that what they have is small.

Salif Keïta is an afro-pop singer-songwriter from Mali who is known as, “Golden Voice of Africa.” Born in a village called Djoliba, he was cast out by his family and ostracized by the community because of his albinism which is regarded as a sign of bad luck in Mandinka culture.
In his growing up years, Keita experienced some financial challenges which almost affected his education negatively. There was a day he was not allowed to write an exam because of his bad sight; but that singular experience brought a complete turnaround in his life and that episode has remained fresh in his memory.
When his classmates got wind of the fact that one of them could not write his exam because he had no money to get a pair of glasses which would enhance his view, they came together under one umbrella and contributed money from the little their parents gave to them as stipend. Surprisingly, this little effort yielded the required fruit as Keita was able to get a pair of glasses from this fund and he was able to continue his education.
As individuals or groups, we sometimes withhold what we have instead of giving it out because we believe, ‘It is too small.’ I have tried to imagine how much each student contributed towards the common cause of getting a pair of glasses for Keita but the beauty is that in the long run, they were able to pull their resources together in order to meet the need of a young boy whose destiny was about to be jeopardized because he was ostracized by his family and community because of ignorance.
Many lives are wasting away because their little needs are not met by those who have solutions to those problems because they have not utilized the little they have with or in them because of the erroneous belief that what they have is small.
Paul told Timothy in 2 Timothy 2:2 that, “And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.” Timothy’s mentor challenged him to pass on what he had learnt from him to other people who would in turn teach another set of people and it goes on and on.
Honestly, as an individual, you may think that you have only one talent which may be relatively insignificant in your eyes so you have decided to bury it just like the story in the book of Luke 19: 12-26; but you know what? That one gift may be all you need to shine like a star where you are. One talent is never small if it is put into optimum use!
Some of us believe that we are very weak so we often recluse when it is time for us to be actively involved in a group task. We are shortchanging ourselves if we don’t know. This is because in that group, there will be a time when just our suggestion on a particular issue is what will be needed to pull through. Yes, we may be physically weak but that does not translate to mental weakness.
Time waits for no one so, what we can do today, don’t let us postpone it till tomorrow just because we have a belief that what is within our reach is far too small. As little as our gifts may be, that may be what is needed to open a great door unto us.
Let us be active wherever we are and always make our positive opinions known because that little is going to take us to places we can never imagine. Remember, it was the interpretation of dreams that took Joseph from the prison to the Palace.
