There had therefore arisen the need for a retreat. The Master Himself understood that quite well; that was why He suggested they go to a desert place; a place where they could be off the radar of the public and get some well deserved rest. And so off they went quietly by ship. On alighting from the ship, the Master was surprised at what He saw. The multitude was overwhelming, not only that, He was also surprised that the people could outrun the disciples and Him by foot and be there before them!
Filled with compassion He suspended the much deserved rest He had come there to get and began to teach them (and to think for once He thought He could escape unnoticed). When the day was now far spent, His disciples came unto Him, and said, this is a desert place, and now the time is far passed: send them away, that they may go into the country round about, and into the villages, and buy themselves bread: for they have nothing to eat. Mark 6: 35-36.
At every interval at the slightest challenge, it was always a wonder to Jesus how the disciples responded to situations. Who told them that ‘this was a desert place? How could this be a desert place when in their midst was the One who gives life to all things; would such a place still be called a desert place? They were pointing out to Him that the time was far spent! ‘Who told them that’? What was the meaning of time to the One who lives in eternity? He thought it ridiculous to be asked to send them away; send them away to whom? How could you send away the ones that had already come to the Bread of Life? Which bread were they going to look for; which bread could satisfy like Him?
“—I am the Bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he that believes in Me shall never thirst. John 6:35. Even when He suggested they gave the people something to eat, He thought they would have taken the cue from Him and understood that the solution had come. But no, they were busy talking about money; doing their calculations! What would you be calculating before the original inventor of calculus itself?
Had they not come across the portion of the scriptures that talked about buying without money? “Ho! Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come buy and eat. Yes come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend money for what is not bread, and your wages for what does not satisfy–.” Isaiah 55:1-2
In order not to waste further time He commanded them to make them all sit down in groups. With the five loaves and two fishes made available He performed the spectacular miracle of feeding five thousand men, excluding women and children! Alleluia!
Friend, I don’t know who told you what. Maybe your case is a case of childlessness and you have been told that time is far spent or that the conditions around you are not right. We serve a God to whom time is of no essence! Don’t calculate any further; don’t look at the situations either. Look up, for He would disprove the experts and Silence your Mockers in Jesus name. Maybe your finances are low; the One that owns silver and gold; that gives power to get wealth would visit you!
Perhaps you have found yourself in a desert place and the whole world seems to have deserted you, hang in there; He has not deserted you; for He says:
“—I will never leave you nor forsake you.” Heb 13: 5
Fret no more about, who told you what and what they said. Let us rise up and give praise to the One whose words are final!
