The old word, “peculiar” here is not what it used to mean. Today the meaning is, “odd, weird” or something to be looked at with negativity. However, in the old King James Version, the word, “Peculiar” meant, “something special.” And this was exactly what God wanted Israel to be-something special, set apart, only claimed by God and no one else. That is why God said to Israel, you are to be my special treasure.
God chose you- He chose you to be the one to show forth His praises and manifest His glory in the earth. You are a special person. In the Old Testament, God made a promise to the children of Israel when He said, “Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people…” (Exodus 19:5). This promise was for the Old Testament folks that weren’t born again. However, when you become born again you automatically become an obedient child of God (1 Peter 1:3-5) and as a result you become a peculiar treasure unto God. 1 Peter 2:9-10.
God’s description of you is instructive; He says you are a chosen generation, royal and peculiar. You are unique and special to God. You are the most cherished and celebrated of all His creation. No wonder James said “Of His own will begat He us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first fruits of His creatures” (James 1:18). It means you are the first and the best of everything made by God.
It doesn’t matter: It does not matter whether the circumstances around you say otherwise, like the economic recession that we faced as a country, and the current economic realities of Nigeria, you are still God’s peculiar treasure. You are the apple of His eyes. All your life, you may have thought you were ordinary and that there was nothing special about you, truth has come to you today. Before God, you are precious, special and peculiar. He looks at you as though you are the only person existing, and He loves you as though you are the only one on earth.
You must live true to what He says you are: You must begin to walk, talk, and live with the consciousness that you are not an ordinary person; you are a peculiar treasure to God! That’s why He paid such a high price on you: the blood of His Son, Jesus Christ, to redeem you. Every day, hold your head up with dignity and say, “I’m special to God; I’m His peculiar treasure and most prized possession.” Those around you may say you’re bragging but it doesn’t matter. Just keep calling yourself what God has called you in His Word. You are His peculiar treasure.
Are our families Fulfilling God’s Plan? The family is the basic unit of the society and the church. It is in the family that we learn to communicate and that we learn what is good or bad. It is in the family that we learn what love is because it is in the family that we first receive love. It is in the family that we first learn how to forgive and to pray. It is in the family that we first learn about God and our saviour Jesus Christ. It is in the family that we learn how to value ourselves and everything else; picking up our values from what is said and unsaid by our parents. Our family therefore forms us for many years to come. The future of humanity if Jesus tarries depends on the family because it is through the family that we all come. There are many attempts today to redefine the family but they do not reflect God’s plan for the family. Family is a man, woman and the children! Very simple. Gen. 2
